MEDIA RELEASE - Businesses Achieve Symmetry Bronze for Sustainability

4 July 2008

An impressive 15 small businesses from across the Macarthur-Liverpool region received formal recognition for their commitment to the environment at a ceremony held this week at The Beer Shed in Leumeah.

MACROC President, Cr Rob Elliott, presented the businesses with a certificate of recognition, acknowledging completion of the first stage of MACROC’s Symmetry Sustainable Business program.

Symmetry is a MACROC project funded by AusIndustry under the Building Entrepreneurship in Small Business Program. It aims to improve the environmental practices of small business through mentoring. The University of Western Sydney, Macarthur Centre for Sustainable Living and Macarthur Business Enterprise Centre are project partners, with local media outlets C91.3 and The Macarthur Advertiser providing media support for the initiative.

Cr Elliott said that participation in the program assists businesses in reducing their carbon footprint and improving their bottom-line as a result.

“The Symmetry program aims to help small businesses achieve efficiency in respect to water and energy usage and improve their waste management practices.

“Businesses that have embraced Symmetry are being profiled in the Symmetry NewsLink newsletter and listed on the Make It In Macarthur website (www.makeitinmacarthur.com.au). This exposure provides a significant marketing edge, as participating businesses are able to plausibly demonstrate the environmental credentials of their goods and services, thereby enabling them to capture the growing share of the ‘green market’.

“I believe that Symmetry is good for business, and that a good environment is smart business. I encourage businesses to enrol in Symmetry Bronze to demonstrate their commitment to the environment, and to implement strategies to work towards attaining Silver and Gold accreditation with the assistance of a specialised mentor to help them achieve their environmental goals,” Cr Elliott said.
