MEDIA RELEASE - STD Telephone Calls Charges for Macarthur Must Go

MACROC President, Councillor Anoulack Chanthivong, today called for telephone companies to scrap higher STD telephone call charges for Macarthur businesses and residents, when calls are made to metropolitan Sydney and North Sydney.

“Macarthur is a significant economic region and will be experiencing significant population growth.  We are very much a part of the greater Sydney economic region,” Cr Chanthivong said.

“All telephone companies need to recognise this and make changes to the way they charge telephone calls by Macarthur residents and businesses,” Cr Chanthivong said.

“A number of people from Macarthur travel to the Sydney CBD and North Sydney for work.  Further many of our local businesses constantly trade with businesses in and around the greater Sydney economic region,” 
Cr Chanthivong said.

“These higher charges are an unjustified additional cost for our region and make our local businesses less competitive,” Cr Chanthivong said.

MACROC has scheduled a meeting with a representative from Telstra to discuss this issue and will be pushing for calls from the Macarthur to the Sydney CBD and North Sydney to be classified as untimed local calls.
