Annual Report 2005 - 2006

This is my final year as President of MACROC and I would like to thank Board members and the staff for their support during my term as President. I would like to especially thank the Executive Officers Lindy Babb and Imam Ali for their professionalism and commitment. I could not have completed my duties as President without the support of the three General Managers. Their counsel and commitment to MACROC is outstanding.

Over the past few years MACROC has grown in relevance to our region, with a major focus upon economic development. Macarthur as a region of Sydney is becoming more and more identified nationally, offering many opportunities for investment and a quality life style. This image and the opportunities offered are a result of the co-operation between the three constituent councils and their common vision for the region.

During my term as President we have invited Liverpool City Council to participate as observers at MACROC Board meetings, regional planning meetings and regional advocacy. Looking to the south we have also included Wingecarribee Council in our regional waste solutions, which will see a state of the art solution to waste management in our region. This project demonstrated the strength of the relationship between the councils involved and how beneficial joint projects can be for our communities.

A highlight of the year was also the Macarthur Mayoral Charity Ball, which raised over thirty thousand dollars for charities across the region. The launch of the Macarthur Business Hall of Fame earlier this year also highlighted the importance of recognizing those within our community who have made such a significant contribution towards the development of our region. The launch of the 'Make It In Macarthur' campaign capped off a significant focus upon Macarthur as a premium region for economic growth and a great place to live.

Over the past twelve months I have represented MACROC at the ROC Presidents meetings with the Department of Planning Senior staff and the Minister. These have been very informative and an excellent conduit of information between Local Government and the State in relation to development within the Metropolitan Sydney. Recently briefing notes have been distributed outlining discussions at those meetings. More importantly has been our initiative to form the Planners Group including Liverpool which has met regularly throughout the year. The Planners Group has addressed many regional issues and is focused upon the development of the Sydney South West Sub Regional Plan. It is this plan that is of significant value to the future of Macarthur. Once again the cooperation between the constituent councils has been outstanding and Macarthur is in a strong position to move forward into the future as a result of the work we do together.

The future of MACROC is excellent as development across the region continues. New alliances will be forged and each constituent council will be able to deliver the aspirations of each of their communities because of the quality of the relationship that has developed between the member councils.

I would like to wish the incoming President great success as he/she continues to receive the same level of support and trust I received from all Board members over the past two years. I am very confident that the role of MACROC will continue to develop in relevance but I also believe MACROC will be a core necessity if our region is to prosper into the future.

Cr Phil Costa
President
