Annual Report 2006 - 2007
The year has seen some significant achievements and with the establishment of a strong operational team in place in early 2007 the profile of the organisation has been substantially raised within the Macarthur Region and beyond. Macarthur is increasingly being identified as a distinct region of Sydney, one that offers great opportunities for investment, business and employment opportunities and a good quality of life. This image of the Macarthur Region is one that is being promoted by the enthusiastic cooperation of the three MACROC Member Councils underpinned by their combined vision for the future of the Region and its residents. The South West Growth Centre Development, together with the NSW Government State Plan, has identified the South West Corridor of Liverpool and the MACROC Councils as one of substantial targeted growth over the next 25 years. This growth will present the Region with substantial challenges as well as many opportunities. Since early 2006 Liverpool City Council has attended MACROC Board Meetings as an observer and it is my hope that Liverpool will join as a Member Council. Liverpool is already participating with our Councils in regional planning meetings and in regional advocacy. With the South West Sydney Councils acting as a strong regional force through MACROC, we will be able to work collectively to maximise the positive benefits that the increased growth of the Region will offer. Wingecarribee Shire Council has also been invited to attend MACROC Board Meetings as an observer and the Macarthur Resource Recovery Park officially launched in May 2007, is a wonderful example of the benefit that regional cooperation brings to our communities, with four South West Councils, Camden, Campbelltown, Wollondilly and Wingecarribee, working together to achieve an integrated solution to waste management to extract the highest possible resource value with minimal cost to their communities. The period saw a continued focus on economic development and MACROC either initiated or participated in a number of events designed to promote the Region and encourage economic growth. These include the creation of the Macarthur Business Hall of Fame, the continuation of the MACROC CEO Breakfast Forums and the hosting of Macarthur Regional Investment Summit. Reflecting a heightened level of concern worldwide about the environment, MACROC has taken the lead in a number of projects relating to the environment and to all aspect of sustainability within the Macarthur Region. MACROC continues to act as one of the key supporters of the Macarthur Centre for Sustainable Living and was successful in a bid for Intensive Sustainability Training for the MACROC Councils as well as Liverpool City Council. MACROC has also been an effective advocate for the Region, particularly in the area of planning reform and lobbying for better implementation of the NSW State Government’s Metropolitan Strategy. Several submissions were made to various Parliamentary Commissions including one on the Final Report of the Health Impacts of Air Pollution in the Sydney Basin. I would like to acknowledge the commitment of the staff of the MACROC Councils who have participated in working parties to enhance and progress regional issues. These working parties play an important role in the success of the Region and MACROC will continue to coordinate such groups to enhance and maximise achievements for the Region. I offer special thanks to my fellow Executive Members who take time from what is, increasingly, a very demanding work schedule to attend Executive Meetings and support regional cooperation in order to maximise benefits for the entire Region. To MACROC Board Members, thank you for your commitment to MACROC. I look forward to continuing to work with you for the second part of my term as President. Special thanks also to the Deputy General Manager of Campbelltown City Council, Mr Barry Daley, who has fulfilled the role as Treasurer for the organisation. Barry has also provided encouragement and guidance for MACROC staff and his corporate knowledge of the organisation has proved a valuable resource. Finally, I would like to thank the Executive Officer of MACROC, Christine Winning for the enthusiasm and commitment that she has displayed since her appointment. Christine has brought considerable expertise to the organisation and together with the talents of Imam Ali, Economic Development Officer and Pamela Corscadden, Administrative Assistant, I am confident that the MACROC Team will continue to produce great results with limited resources. Councillor Rob Elliott
