Annual Report - 2004My President's Message to the 2004 Annual General Meeting coincides with the closing of my two-year term as President of the Macarthur Regional Organisation of Councils. It has been an honour to be the President of this important organisation and contribute to the improvement of MACROC’s policy and practice for the benefit of the Macarthur Region. During my presidency, MACROC has been comprised of two boards appointed before and after the March 2004 local government elections. I acknowledge the contribution of all board members during this time to MACROC’s work. Board representation of our Macarthur constituency has always been of a high standard. I extend my appreciation to Lindy Babb who has valuably served as Executive Officer during my term as President. Lindy Babb has advanced the stewardship of MACROC and enhanced the role and standing of MACROC in the community. Lindy Babb is now joined by Robert Suber, MACROC's Economic Development Officer. The recently approved Economic Development Plan is one of the organisation’s most positive steps forward to increase long-term employment and enterprise in our region. MACROC in the last two years has consolidated its role as the primary advocate for the physical and social infrastructure requirements of our region. MACROC is held in high regard by both the public and private sector for being in touch with the needs and aspirations of our region and for examining innovative solutions to benefit the economic growth objectives of Macarthur. MACROC’s recent endeavours include the campaign to establish a Medical Faculty at the University of Western Sydney’s Campbelltown Campus; concentration on regional partnerships, in particular to revive Grow Macarthur; providing a Macarthur perspective to the Sydney Metropolitan Planning Strategy; a forum and essay competition to coincide with the Year of the Built Environment; project sponsor of the CSIRO ‘Twin Cam’ project to facilitate data to assist sustainable development in the Macarthur region; and the continuing success of the CEO forum and golf day that promote discussion and provide networking opportunities for business and the community. MACROC enters an exciting phase with its involvement in the Macarthur Centre for Education and Research in Environmental Sustainability – a project funded by the Federal Government’s Sustainable Regions Advisory Committee. MACROC’s commitment to improving the lifestyle and opportunities for future generations of our region is matched by our commitment to encouraging access and growth of information technology. The recent launch of MACROC’s new website is part of this process and part of the organisation’s commitment to improving dialogue with our community and the world. Institutions retain their legitimacy by developing approaches relevant to the contemporary society they function within. All institutions require regular review of their role and operations to ensure relevance is maintained. MACROC should confidentially engage in such a review, particularly in regard to its funding and priorities, to consolidate our achievements as our region embarks on its positive future.
