In 2005/06 Macarthur region's Gross Regional Product (GRP) totalled $5.1 billion, which was 1.8% of the NSW Gross State Product of $282.1 billion.
GRP, a key indicator of regional economic activity, is the total value of all final goods and services produced for money in the region, after deducting the cost of goods and services used in the process of production, but before depreciation.
Campbelltown remains the economic powerhouse of the region with its GRP estimated at $3 billion, followed by Wollondilly and Camden at close to a billion dollars each.

The September 2006 issue of the Macarthur Economic Profile shows a deteriorating unemployment situation with the number of people unemployed rising by 8.2% in the June quarter, leading to an unemployment rate of 6.3% in Macarthur compared to the State and National jobless rates of 5.3% and 5.1% respectively.
Cr Phillip Costa, the MACROC President and Mayor of Wollondilly said that "the value of non-residential construction rose 2% to $68.2 million in the June quarter which together with a rebound in house prices in the March quarter partially offset the weakness in residential construction and the labour market."

MACROC has provided input to the development of the Metropolitan Strategy primarily through the coordination of responses of its member councils – Camden, Campbelltown and Wollondilly. It has participated in a number of workshops focussed on subregional land use and development issues including business centres and employment lands, residential development opportunities and transport. Liverpool City Council, a local government area significantly affected by the growth targets contained in the Metropolitan Strategy, has worked collaboratively with MACROC and its member councils in the subregional planning process.

Macroc launches the Make it in Macarthur Website. This website is the main regional repository for information, including economic and commercial information to promote growth and expansion of business in Macarthur.
The branding initiative arose from the Economic Development Plan for Macarthur prepared from Federal Government funding under the Sustainable Regions Program. The Plan noted that positive perceptions are a major drawcard towards attracting new business and creating employment and wealth in the region. Hence, a marketing campaign entitled - 'Put Macarthur on the Map'- was recommended, along with a couple of other measures aimed at promoting new enterprises and supporting business capabilities.
